Twitch Plays Pokemon
A Pop Culture Case Study of Convergence Culture, Participatory Culture, and Collective Intelligence
The Relationship Between Convergence Culture, Participatory Culture, and Collective Intelligence
Convergence culture's key attributes are participatory culture and collective intelligence. Convergence culture spreads the media across multiple platforms, which is spurred onward by participatory culture and leads to the need for collective intelligence in order to consume the media. This relationship can be seen in Twitch Plays Pokemon as the platform was created, the participatory culture spread it to other media, and collective intelligence was used to consume the media.
As Jenkins explains, the circulation of media content "depends heavily on consumers' active participation" (Jenkins 3).
Where Twitch Plays Pokemon goes from here, we'll have to watch and see. The creator reports, “I intend on running the stream for as long as it still has an active following” (Nunnely).
